Hands up if you love yourself some delicious Asian BBQ flavours? You can’t see, but believe me when I say, both of my hands are up. I was absolutely obsessed with banh mi after visiting Vietnam, and this Sticky BBQ Tofu Sub right here, well, it fills that big ol’ banh mi shaped hole in my belly.

It’s sticky, a little bit spicy and when you combine it with the freshness of cucumber and coriander – it’s an absolute dream. I can definitely see this sub becoming one of my go-to recipes week in and week out.
It also happens to be a very easy recipe. It can be whipped together in almost no time at all. And the glaze really only requires pantry staples. What a winner!
Look, I’ll be honest, there really isn’t a lot to be said about the nutritional value of this recipe. But you know, sometimes you just need to eat something that’s a little bit naughty. So, next time you find yourself craving an dirty, drippy, honking burger – I honestly don’t know what I mean by honking, but it seemed appropriate – try this recipe out.

p.s. I made some homemade chips to serve it with – but before popping in the oven, I sprinkled some of the BBQ spice rub over the chips with a little oil. I highly recommend!

- Cucumber
- Lettuce
- Sriracha Mayo
Instructions
- Press tofu using desired method – (I wrap mine in a towel and then place between two chopping boards with a cast-iron skillet on top and leave for at least 20 minutes.)
- Mix all the dry ingredients listed under BBQ Spice Rub.
- Place all the BBQ glaze ingredients into a pot and bring to boil over medium heat (it smells so delicious at this point!)
- Decrease to a low heat and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes.
- Set aside the sauce to cool slightly before using an immersion blender to make a smooth glaze.
- Preheat the over to 200 degrees celsius and prepare a baking sheet with baking paper.
- Slice the tofu into strips. Rub the remaining BBQ Spice Rub over the tofu and then place on the baking sheet in the oven – bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking time.
- Remove the tofu slabs from the oven and then coat in the BBQ Glaze.
- Place tofu slabs back in the oven for a remaining 5-10 minutes until nice and sticky.
- Brush the inside of your ciabatta buns with sesame oil and place under the grill for a few minutes, or until desired toastiness.
- Assemble your sub with BBQ Glazed tofu and desired filling!
